“HE” Is Not The God of The Dead…

Veterans Day_2While those who died on the battle field should be remembered, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military – whether during “peacetime”, or a time of war. As a matter of fact, according to Valerie Strauss “Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served – not only those who died – have sacrificed and done their duty.” And I totally agree!

Memorial Day, is a day set aside in observance those soldiers that have died in wartime service. While, this is very important, I would also like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the men and women who have given up and sacrificed their lives so that we can enjoy the freedoms that we take for granted today! Yes, I used the terms “given up” and “sacrificed” – for the truth that – although they are among the living their lives and bodies are no longer their own! Battle wounds and scars not only affect the soldiers themselves, but also the families and friends of that soldier.

So, in my opinion more attention, tribute and honor should be given to those veterans that are live and breath among us! Look anywhere, and you will find a veteran. A man or woman that made the decision put on fatigues, put themselves in harm’s way and pay the price for OUR greater good! We owe them more than we could ever pay. It is because of them, that we can proudly fly our flag. The color red stands for the blood that runs through course of their veins of courage. The white, for their purity and integrity and blue, for what happened because of their perseverance and justice. All of our colors fly proudly because of them! We are free because of them. We are safe from harm because of them. We have freedom of religion, because of them. We can choose our lives, because of them. Because of them we have so many rights, privileges and advantages that we daily take for granted — but only because these brave men and women continue to fight for us!

So, yeah we should honor the living more than the dead. {Matthew 22:32 / Mark 12:27 / Luke 20:38} And for those of you who may criticize me, call me unpatriotic, or unsympathetic or or unappreciative or whatever, it is that you say of me….I was in Operation Just Cause (which many of you probably don’t know about; or have simply just forgotten), Desert Shield and Desert Storm…among others. So, I do have an opinion…and I’ve fought so that my opinion (as well as yours) – could be expressed. Freedom is not free – and that includes freedom of speech!

The ironic thing about it is, if I had been killed – then I would probably(it’s more likely that I still wouldn’t get recognized even on Memorial Day) be labled a Hero! But, in that I survived…well, let’s just say I feel less than a Hero! Here’s an oxymoron: A HOMELESS VET! And here’s another: Veterans Waiting For Medicare!! America this shouldn’t be the case!!

If you really want to honor us – then truly honor those of us who are among the living. Not just giving out freebies, on this “hallmark” day…but, in just the course of our everyday lives! How many of you, have just taken a veteran out for coffee or dinner just to say thank you?! How many of you end your phone conversations with “….thank you for your service!”?! When was the last time you greeted a soldier with a salute (other than on Veterans Day)?!

If we would take the time to honor our veterans we  we acknowledge their present, remember their past, but more importantly, give them freedom their future!
