Thousands of years ago, Israelite people would bring a measure of their spring barley harvest to the Temple in Jerusalem in the spring as an offering of gratitude for a successful harvest. After that, they would count forty-nine days to the next harvest, the wheat, which was essential to survival over the following months. This practice was then codified and described in the Bible.
Since those ancient times, Jewish evening prayers throughout the world follow a set pattern. And is commonly referred to as the “Counting of the Omer“.
The Counting of the Omer is an injection of karmic and cosmic cleansing. During these forty-nine days following, Passover (just before what we consider to be Easter) – the Universe affords us the opportunity to rid ourselves of all negative influences from every area of our lives.
After Passover, we begin anticipating Pentecost, the next holiday and in essence the conclusion of the Passover. Even though Christ paid the ultimate price for us by sacrificing himself on the cross; The Omer is the work that we are commanded and MUST do to earn the benefits of the Holy Ghost!
We cleanse ourselves by counting the days of the Omer until the arrival of Pentecost. It is best to count the Omer at nightfall; however, one may count at any time throughout the night.
Over the course of these next seven weeks, all of humanity have the amazing opportunity to not only release the negative aspects of our ACTIONS (States of Being). But to reveal more of GOOD in our everyday lives. Yes, this spiritual exercise takes a great amount commitment and faithfulness; and at times may be painful. But the benefits of releasing the trapped sparks of Light are well worth it!
